Calexico Carne Asada on Union Street [Brooklyn]

We finally got to try out Calexico Carne Asada in Red Hook. It’s kinda off the beaten path so we rode our bikes over there. Our tacos came very fast and very fresh (unlike our experience at Fast and Fresh).  We ordered carne asada $4, chicken $3(above), and pulled pork $3 tacos.

All tacos seem to be served with a bed of raw cabbage in them, which adds texture but not flavor. The chicken was grilled, tender, and juicy – all wonderful things. Not overly interesting but fresh and delicious.

Next up was carne asada, which better be good since it’s 2/3 of the restaurant’s name! Well, the steak was pretty good but a little over cooked. I have to say, I enjoyed OAXACA‘s steak taco a bit more.

The pulled pork had great texture, but could use some more TLC in the seasoning department. When I think of Mexicans and pork, I think of sabor! It was also a bit drippy which I never understand.

Did I have a few complaints? Yes. However, was it still damn good? Yes. Am I annoyed it’s in the middle of nowhere? You bet. Am I giving it 4 sombreros? Si.

  1. Those pictures should be in a magazine! Love that camera.

  2. Camera may be great but the photographer is not bad either!
It makes me want to dive in.
    Very good job!

  3. nice review! I love the pork tacos and that pumpkin seed salsa in the salsa bar is epic.

  4. Those pictures should be in a magazine! Love that camera.

  5. I tried eating there when it first opeend and it was really good. I didn’t get the tacos, but it looks like I’ll have to make the trip. Not as fancy as some of the other restaurants, but the food was worth coming back to get. Guess I’ll be back soon now.

  6. Just moved from Provo to American Fork a few weeks ago and this was the first restaurant we checekd out once we got moved in. Definitely agree with the best Mexican in Utah County statement. Finally, some good Mexican food down here!! Now if only they would get some real forks and knives instead of the cheapo plastic ones that really don’t cut it (ha!).

  7. Times are changing for the better if I can get this online!

  8. Thanks for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do some research about this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I am very glad to see such great information being shared freely out there.

  9. Kari – You have no idea how much we miss the Burrito Factory down here. You would think San Diego would have mean Mexican food and I’ll give them the fish taco but can’t find a super burrito to save my life.

  10. wo-wo-wo WOW brother! Congratulations! Thinking of your epics helps keep me diinggg deeper, staying longer, taken the throws. Speakin of, how about spinning a second time on that ’03 hike? Ghost is angling for the crown of first to second; I say never know what shennigans any of the 3 T’s might pull. Good luck w/the rebound.

  11. This “free sharing” of information seems too good to be true. Like communism.

  12. Perfect shot! Thanks for your post!

  16. Good point. I hadn’t thought about it quite that way. :)

  17. Grazi for making it nice and EZ.

  18. Good to see real expertise on display. Your contribution is most welcome.

  19. I was curious if you ever considered changing the structure of your blog? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 pictures. Maybe you could space it out better?

  20. A provocative insight! Just what we need!

  21. I can’t believe you’re not playing with me–that was so helpful.

  22. Yeah, and arranged in reserve the unemployment price, as well as the huge consumer debt and deficit, the lagging economic system, our downward reputation inside the eyes in the planet, the shredding of our Structure, the insidious and treacherous takeover of our federal government, the expanding type warfare and racism, and all from the other unfavorable points that were persevering with to transpire, non-stop, because the Hussein Program needed around
